Sierra Leone boasts a rich history dating back over 2,500 years, with early inhabitants like the Limba laying the groundwork. Portuguese explorers in the 15th century gave the country its name, meaning “Lion Mountains.” Sierra Leone became a beacon of hope in the late 18th century when it was founded as a home for freed slaves, eventually forming Freetown. Nicknamed the “Athens of West Africa” for its early emphasis on education, Sierra Leone transitioned from a British colony to an independent nation in 1961.
